The Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation (TWF) focuses on the Upper Tippecanoe River Basin Watershed which encompasses 113.8 square miles, covering portions of three counties: Kosciusko, Whitley and Noble. This is part of the larger Tippecanoe River Watershed that encompasses 14 counties and is over 1 million acres. The primary land use in this area is agricultural 69.8%, forested 17.8%, urban 0.6%, wetlands 6.8%, open water 4.3%, and other 0.6%. The Upper Tippy watershed contains over 50 lakes (greater than 1 acre) that are connected via the Tippecanoe River.
The Upper Tippy Watershed....
This upper Tippecanoe watershed is composed of the following sub-basins as shown below. These sub-basins are: James/Tippecanoe, Webster, Barbee, Smalley, Crooked/Big, Loon/Goose/Old, Elder/Ceder and Robinson/Ridinger with the Tippecanoe River and Grassy Creek being the main water corridors.

The Miami and Shawnee Indians named the Tippecanoe River Kithtippecanunk, or "place of the buffalo fish," which still can be found in the river. Its clear waters and wooded shores provide rich habitat for the abundance of fish, mussels and wildlife that live here.

Very few streams in the upper Midwest can match the number of imperiled species or the overall species diversity that the Tippecanoe River supports. Because of this, the Nature Conservancy considers Tippecanoe one of the top 10 rivers in America to preserve. Yet despite its relatively pristine past, increased sediment is deteriorating the river's clarity, negatively affecting its plant and animal life.

The major threats to the waters in the watershed are soil erosion and associated nutrient loading.

The Tippecanoe Environmental Lakes & Watershed Foundation is a group of property owners and visitors throughout the Upper Tippy watershed that work to coordinate efforts to sustain the lakes and streams as we know them. TELWF.ORG is hosted with a discount courtesy of the iPage coupon blog.

Keep currrent on Tippecanoe Watershed activities and issues

We will attempt to keep you as current as possible with this website. It will complement the newsletter which we publish several times/year.
TELWF is starting to simplify its name to Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation so the acronym TWF will start to appear on the website and in documentation. It's the same organization only streamlined. The legal name, TELWF, will not change.

We will also have monthly meetings at the North Webster Community Center on the first Saturday of the month starting in January 2008 thru November 2008.
